Calcium Carbonate has established itself as the main extender in paints and coatings. Due to their ability to enhance paint performance, Omya Calcium Carbonates act as functional mineral fillers rather than mere extenders. A systematic selection of the right filler significantly influences key paint properties, such as opacity, brightness, sheen, and wet-scrub resistance. Omya offers an extensive range of standard and specialty Calcium Carbonates with different particle sizes, morphologies, and color ranges that improve the properties of the final product. In general terms, opacity can be described as the ability of a substance or mixture to hide a substrate. A typical example would be a coating film covering a given surface such as a wall. This simple phenomenon is the result of a rather complex interplay of various components and parameters. In the industry, opacity is often referred to using other terms such as contrast ratio or hiding power. Whatever term is used, the common functionality they describe is the ability of an applied optical layer to hide what is underneath.

Key factors influencing the opacity of a film are amount and type of titanium dioxide, mineral filler (size, shape, and volume), pigment volume concentration (PVC), spreading rate, and film porosity. PVC level and film porosity are particularly important when it comes to film opacity. Coatings formulated at low PVC typically exhibit high durability, providing good weather and wet scrub resistance but high pigment levels are required to achieve acceptable opacity performance. Formulations with high PVC are usually less durable, but require less pigment to achieve good coverage due to increased film porosity. Omya offers solutions across all PVC levels, allowing for optimal adjustment of coating opacity while keeping formulation cost to a minimum, both above and below critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC).


If a formulation requires matting agents to achieve low sheen values, Modified Calcium Carbonates can be a good choice to complement the performance of Calcium Carbonate based products in coating systems. Modified Calcium Carbonates allow for easy adjustment of sheen values with at low addition rates while also boosting the opacity of the formulation.
